And as a business owner, I really wrestled with that number being on large projects, that multiplier feeling like it was a little bit,
A little bit heavy.
A little heavy.
And on small projects, maybe a lot too light.
And I kept thinking, I need to have an adjustable margin.
But then I really also wrestled with how I went from a 35% or 40% margin to an 8% net profit and what was happening inside this big ball of money.
And if you ever had a client that wanted to see the numbers,
It was terrifying because they were gonna see this big number that you'd slapped on the thing.
And you would have to try to explain to them, well, that's not really profit.
That's like overhead.
And it's also a bunch of salary wages because of managing the project.
And truthfully, we get a tiny little piece of that at the end of the day.
And I thought, well, let's actually figure out, let's break that into as many small pieces as we can so we can get a good handle on it.
So the underlying premise of COPE is overhead is a function of time.
and you have to apply overhead to projects based on duration of project.
And we've got a nifty little formula.
It's not hard to figure out like, but we've got a nifty little formula for looking at your overall overhead for the year, your average number of projects that you run concurrently.
And then from there developing an overhead assignment by day or by week that you then attach to a project.
