We know that exercise reduces levels of inflammation in people's bodies.
If you exercise people or rats, their levels of inflammation go down.
We've also been able to show that smoking increases your risk for depression.
So if you're a smoker,
you have roughly a doubled risk of developing depression.
Now, that's a curious thing because most people aren't aware of the fact that smokers are at an increased risk of developing depression, even though they've never been depressed before.
No surprise, smoking increases inflammation.
So we think there's a pretty good body of evidence that ties inflammation at the root of many of the environmental causes of depression.
There's no question.
And so often the picture may well begin with stress, add in a dollop of bad lifestyle, add in a bit of genetic vulnerability.
And you get an abnormal stress reaction, which includes inflammation.
So this can lead to lowered mood because you have increased inflammation.
You have oxidative stress.
This oxidative stress damages many key components of the cellular environment.
Including in the brain.
Particularly in the brain.
So one gets oxidation.
In the same way that you cut an apple, it goes brown when you expose it to air, oxygen in the air.
Similar things can happen in the brain.
So if you have excessive oxidative stress, which is unbalanced or uncompensated, damage can occur to lipids, proteins, and it can even lead to cellular death.
