you knew pretty quickly who talked to who.
So I was like, okay, instead of talking to the CEO or the chair, I'm going to go talk to the assistant coach or the guy that's the COO and build relationships with them because at some point they will move up the food chain and they'll remember that you took the time and effort to get to know them.
Now, of course, there are others that you need to get along with, guys like Nick Politis and what, but my relationship with Nick wasn't as good as it was for the first 10 years because
He had people he trusted.
And until you earn that trust, and until you show them that you can be trusted,
They feel like they don't need you.
Why would they when they've got Andrew Webster or they've got Phil Rothfield or they've got other people in the game?
Why do they need me?
And I guess the more you move up, the more your reputation improves in the game, the more they start to think, okay, well, I can trust this guy or I do need this guy.
And a perfect example, I think, with Nick Politis is we spent a lot of time together in Las Vegas in LA.
Yeah, in 24.
And...
Yeah.
I guess you get to see people for who they are when you're in that environment, you know, not 24 seven, but we were together a lot and I've got a lot of respect for Nick and I feel like, yeah, being in that environment with him and being who I was helped build that relationship.
Probably player managers.
I think for the first chunk of my journalism career, I sort of avoided that.
dealing a lot with agents because I felt like they just wanted you to run their agenda.
And that's not everyone, but my general thought was this was going to be more difficult to get the truth than it was out of people in club land.
So I gravitated towards CEOs and chairmen, which gave me that grounding and networking in the game that really helped me.
