The incident occurred around noon on Sunday in an area controlled by the Taung National Liberation Army, or TNLA, about two miles south of the border with China.
The TNLA is one of the ethnic armed organizations opposed to central rule and signed its latest ceasefire with Myanmar's military in October under pressure from China.
In a statement, the group said the area where the explosion took place was used to store explosives for mining and that an investigation is underway.
Independent and social media reports showed smoke from the explosion and damaged buildings.
