Because Sternberg was Jewish, so right off the top, and now she's making Jewish movies.

As a person, as a Hollywood person, as a person in film history,

Not a great actress, but a great photographic entity.

She understood this, and almost to an extent that was helping her, but also to her detriment, or at least to put a limit on her growth as an actress.

So that means he'd be talking to her here, looking at her, and she'd be looking straight into the camera.

Some of her later performances are better.

But I think the thing about Dietrich that is great

is that she introduced a certain kind of amused irony into the consciousness of the 20th century, into popular entertainment.

There's a wonderful book called The Great War and Modern Memory by a guy named Paul Fussell.

And he talks about how the biggest psychological change that World War I brought is that in the 20s, all of a sudden, everybody became ironic.

and had this kind of attitude of irony.
