Yeah, I would be – I think the job that could be better done is to get a fully understood and mutually agreed context.
That sounds like kind of like fancy language, but basically get everyone on the same page.
If everyone or enough of everyone don't think that child poverty is an issue or ballooning pension costs are an issue or a declining health sector performance is an issue, then
We're going to argue about stuff.
So that's the first thing I'd do is find some way to get everyone on the same page about the big issues.
Now, in companies, that's got to be done.
And just because you're the boss doesn't mean to say everyone lines up with you.
You've got to go through a process to get there.
But that'd be one thing that I would do.
I would be disproportionately funding solutions to strategic problems rather than just trying to fix up today.
So that might be things like investing strongly in technology and AI to enable us to be more productive today that would really help down the track.
It would be investing in parts of the economy that are going to be bigger and important for our future.
Like tourism's great and it's really helpful and it makes a big difference, our second highest export earning part of the economy.
And so much of the money goes to lower skilled jobs and no disrespect to the people who do that, but they're not necessarily at one level, they're not programmers, they are people who are awesome at manaakitanga and greeting people and welcoming.
That's a wonderful capability, but that doesn't scale or grow or enable us to really, we can only really do that in New Zealand.
So I'd be thinking about what are the strategic industries we should be backing and investing disproportionately in that.
And one of the things that businesses always face is you never have enough money to get everything done.
And I learned this great lesson from one of the people I worked with at Z. He was our chief innovation officer.
And he came in one time and I said, look, Scott, we've got to do a better job of planning and prioritizing.
And he said, Mike, I want to stop you there.
