And I think the answer is by 2050, your home will be fully electric.
It might be that one upgrade happens before the other.
And likewise, it all comes down to utilization.
If you don't drive, then buying an electric vehicle might not have a huge economic payback, right?
In the same way, if you're an empty nester and pensioner that doesn't have any, you know, it's just you and the missus living at home or whatever it might be, you might not be a huge hot water user.
And therefore, it might not be the right thing to upgrade first.
So it just depends, really, is what I'm saying.
The way that I would explain it is everything that you, all the energy that you're buying from another source, and will continue to buy from another source because it's not electricity being used, it's gas or petrol or diesel, the more you undermine your solar payback.
But that being said, if you look at the actual cost of solar, when you finance it on your mortgage at 5.5%,
On standard installation costs in New Zealand, you're probably looking at about 11 cents a kilowatt hour, which is just a unit of electricity in the same way that we talk about litres of diesel or litres of petrol, right?
It's one unit of electricity essentially is 11 cents.
Buying it from the grid right now is probably 35 to 40 cents.
You can sign up with Meridian or some of the other retailers out there and get 15 cents on everything you export.
So you can see that the real payback comes from avoiding taking energy from other people, but at the same time, anything that you don't use that you throw back into the grid, you're actually throwing back at a profit at the moment.
That might not last forever, but right now it's a pretty good outcome.
So it depends on what you're into.
Nadine, if you like the idea of putting solar on your rooftop first and then showing the app to all your friends and being one of those really annoying New Zealanders that just can't shut up about their solar system...
Then go for that first.
Oh, you just become a painful friend who won't shut up about it and starts convincing everyone else to go down this path, right?
It's very natural for us to do these kinds of things.
