I'm of the opinion that we don't really need subsidies in order to do this now.

We just need better access to finance for more New Zealanders.

And to give you a really plain and simple example, putting solar on a rooftop here –

in New Zealand will save you enough money to pay back the capital and the interest and still pocket an additional $1,000 a year if you finance it at 5.5% over 30 years.

So it shows you just how powerful this option is.

You can use that $1,000 to pay back the loan faster and get down to six, seven years for a complete capital payback.

Or you can put that $1,000 towards other things, which in the cost of living crisis is actually a pretty important option for people as well.

Yeah, yeah.

And I think the first answer here is to understand exactly what you should be paying is the capital cost for solar in New Zealand, right?

You will install solar on your rooftop.

The average installation size in New Zealand is probably six, seven kilowatts now.

We're advising that most homes to future proof should probably be built more like nine, 10 kilowatts.

The Australians are averaging probably 11, 12 kilowatts.

So it gives you an idea of the size.

And we look at, say, a 9, 10 kilowatt system.

In New Zealand, you should be paying about $2,000 a kilowatt, fully installed, including GST.

So that puts the amount that you put, you know, the cost at about $18,000 to $20,000 to fully install solar on your roof.

Now, if you've got a really complicated roof or there's asbestos or something like that, it may be more than that.

You'll understand what that cost might be.

And if you live in Auckland and it's a really, really simple roof, you might get it down to sort of $1,800 a kilowatt, right?
