Protein has been having a moment.
You walk down any grocery store aisle and sure, you'll see protein bars, protein shakes, the normal stuff.
But in the last year, you might have also come across protein chips, protein cereals, even protein ramen noodles and Pop-Tarts.
That's Khloe Kardashian advertising her protein popcorn brand, Cloud.
Head down the street to the local coffee spot and they might serve you a protein latte.
Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts both have protein-rich options on the menu now.
And that's no accident.
especially when you look at Americans' recent tastes.
The International Food Information Council found last year that high-protein diets were the most popular type of diet for the third year in a row.
70% of Americans say they try to get protein into their diets in some way.
That's Dudley Laming, a pathologist and biomedical researcher at the University of Wisconsin.
And he says it makes some degree of sense why more people are going big on protein all of a sudden, especially when you consider who often eats a lot of protein.
But according to a new review led by Lamming, protein may be a little more nuanced than we're thinking.
He and his researchers referenced over 350 different scientific studies involving protein's effect on humans, mice, and other organisms.
We even saw one study that examined a pair of twins and found the twin that was eating less protein was actually at a lower risk of muscle loss when aging, what's known as sarcopenia.
Now, Lamming says this all goes back to two of the amino acids that make up protein.
According to this research, reducing isoleucine and valine may correspond to a reduced risk of these negative health outcomes.
Now, you might hear that and think, okay, great.
I'll just try to avoid eating stuff that has those two amino acids in it.
Well, not so fast.
