No, so listen, this is the first year since 2017 I won't be doing like an ESPN2 version of the Home Run Derby, right?
Which is like sad, but also I'm enjoying like...
kicking my feet up and actually watching it with my son who's 10 and he's very excited to watch it and what we have is about a decade worth of derbies uh in the stack cast era so we can say okay well we know a little bit about the first halves of each of those years like you know the shapes and sizes of how guys swings or not and who have won so what i've been trying to do is uh take some first half stack cast metrics you know bat speed in more recent years pull decks of velocity hard hit rate all the kind of stuff you're familiar with and say okay well
Did any of this stuff correlate to actual success in the Derby?
And, you know, it's not perfect.
Nothing's going to be perfect because sometimes you get your cousin to pitch and your cousin can't throw strikes and then you're totally screwed.
But there is some signal here in the sense of this is going to be an incredibly obvious takeaway.
If you hit the ball really hard, good things are going to follow.
What I mean by that is every year we have a guy who's a really good hitter in the major leagues, but in a very specific way where they're kind of smaller.
They don't hit the ball as hard.
They're really reliant on like timing the ball into the seat.
So like Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Jose Ramirez, guys who are phenomenal players, but then they get to the Derby and it just doesn't work that well for them because it has to like go perfectly.
There's no margin for error in terms of bat speed and hard hit.
So that's what I've kind of come down to.
And it's like this model I've created, which is, you know, more of a,
a fun toy than a rigorous intellectual pursuit.
It's like, okay, well, the best guy going into the Derby in the last 10 years was 2017 Aaron Judge, and he won the thing, right?
And it's like, of the top eight in my metric, five made the finals, and of the bottom 33, one made the finals.
So it's just sort of a way of quantifying the gut feel of if you crush, you'll probably crush.
Uh, the very first one.
