And meanwhile, all this inventory that he bought was lining the apartment that we lived in.

And like we'd put tablecloths on some of them, and those would be our tables, and um basically it took about a year.

and he finally found this restaurant space which he converted all by himself and um opened up his little gift shop and within the first month um the sales were about thirty five thousand which almost was about what he was making as a ship surveyor.

And the second month the sales doubled and then from there they fell off of a cliff.

And it was because it was Christmas time.

So people were buying these gifts.

And so to make a long story short

Over thirty years this little gift shop turned into a chain of apparel stores for which they started opening factories to make their own merchandise and then they started selling to Macy's and Bloomingdale's and Sacks.

And then when they had all this merchandise for their wholesaling business, my dad started attending foreclosure auctions and all of a sudden he really got this knack for buying property on the cheap.

And over thirty years this tiny little gift shop turned into a diversified investment company that made them millionaires many times over.

Right.

So his story is not that unique.

There's so many different immigrants that I grew up in my own community in Houston where I grew up that have this story and they became really successful over time and frankly

the frustration I felt not being able to start a business myself having all of this training

I started doing what comes easily to me.

I just started picking up the phone and calling other entrepreneurs that never wrote business plans, that never went to business school to see, you know, can you connect the dots?

Is there something similar among these people?

And Adam, you're a wise man because what you're talking about is this bias to action.

And so as I started interviewing these people, they had a very similar way of talking about taking risks and having this just impulsivity almost.
