Yeah, I mean, just in terms, of course, of the people leaving the country, not all of those people will be Brits.
I mean, some of them will be migrants themselves who have been here and have decided to go.
So it's a sort of the emigration picture, which a lot of the right are focusing on, suggesting that there's this
huge sort of emigration of of british nationals i mean there has been some and there has been a bit of a worrying trend of some younger people going abroad perhaps not surprising when you consider the youth unemployment problem that we've got in the country which is getting worse at the moment um but very often these are migrants or students who've finished their studies and and they go abroad um i think that and of course we should say as well that um you know as ever with policy there are trade-offs i mean one of the ways in which the government have really drilled down
and managed to sort of reduce immigration in this way is they've reduced quite severely the number of visas they're giving to people in the care sector, for example.
And you get people in the care sector saying, well, we can't fill these places and we've got a social care crisis.
So there's always trade-offs with this sort of stuff.
I think the other thing, of course, to say is that it's interesting to consider how this will play politically.
Because on the one hand, what you can say, and we have got evidence now that salience in terms of immigration, how much the voters care about it, does seem to have been dropping down the polling.
So pollsters ask, what are the big issues you care about?
There was a period a couple of years ago, perhaps unsurprisingly, when net migration was at nearly a million, when in poll after poll, migration was at the very top of the tree in terms of concern for the public.
Indeed so.
But that has been ticking down over the last few months and immigration is no longer at the top.
The economy is at the top.
Interesting to consider whether that might be one of the reasons why reform, although they did very well, of course, in those local elections, it's true to say that their polling trend over the course of the last six months or so has been on the down.
They've been getting less popular.
It does tend to be, we've got enough experience to say now, that when migration is at the top of the news agenda day after day after day,
Farage tends to have something to say about that, and he tends to become more popular.
They have less to say about the economy.
