He'd rise them up.

First thing he'd say to Susan's husband now, first thing he'd come in, he said, you're sitting in my seat, who told you to sit there?

Or I'd be running out saying, don't park there, pa, that's Ned's spot.

So no, everything was lovely and easy and he enjoyed the crack with the lads and, you know, everything was great.

Then we had a few grandchildren and that took a lease of life.

That changed Ned, he got way softer, like the kids, my lads would all say, God, he was a great grandad, like he was, he just was the coolest grandad, like.

Yeah, and like he hated Christmas always.

He was just a dislike Christmas.

But a few months before he died, we just thought he was after changing.

He was after getting so thoughtful.

Now he was always thoughtful, but he wouldn't show it as much.

But the thing was, on Christmas Eve, we used to always have the whole lot of them over Christmas Eve and we'd do the grandkids' presents.

before they'd go home.

But the ritual was the men would all go to the pub and have three or four drinks and one of my son-in-law's doesn't drink.

So he was the designated driver and he'd bring them all home.

That was done every Christmas for years.

But the Christmas that Ned died, Christmas Eve, the lads arrived and they were going out the door and Ned just turned around and said, I think we'd stay at home.

We were gobsmacked.

No, we'd stay at home and turn down the TV and had fun with the grandkids.

And it was after we all were putting different pieces together and we said, somehow, someway, he had some reason for that.
