That's where they make their money.
But in theory, if you go in, particularly at the end of a month or the end of a financial quarter when dealers are trying to get their numbers up, if you go in with a big suitcase full of cash or, you know, more likely a bank's cash or, you know, a bank draft or whatever, you'll get a better deal.
and you will own the car outright straight away.
And generally speaking, your personal bank, the bank you bank with every day, will be a little bit more understanding further down the line if you need to make adjustments to those repayments or whatever.
It is something that's used on secondhand cars.
I would be very wary about using it on a secondhand car because that guaranteed minimum future value part becomes much trickier to extrapolate when you're dealing with a secondhand car.
And it's just, to me, it's like taking out a new car finance package on a used car.
There's just something about it that makes my teeth itch ever so slightly.
And I just think, again, and particularly because you've got to remember with a used car, generally speaking, you're paying a lot less.
I think come back again to that personal loan idea.
Get a good deal on a personal loan, whether it's a bank, whether it's the credit union, get the lowest interest rate you possibly can.
And you're much more in control of the process then.
The old rule of thumb always used to be buy at two, sell at five.
Because after two years, the worst of the depreciation is in theory done.
Not always the case, but in theory.
And at five years old, there's still enough value left in the car that you can get something back.
You can get a useful amount back either as a cash amount or as a trade-in or whatever.
Personally, I mean, I can give you my personal experiences, which is we bought a car just recently, actually, that was just fractionally more than one year old.
Got a fantastic deal on it.
It's still worth a good chunk.
