He didn't think to explore the matter further, as they still had some walking to do, but he was at a complete loss as to how his best friend of many years could forget meeting his dad.
However, these thoughts were quickly overlooked as soon the party reached the waiting passenger van and climbed in.
As the van took off, headed back towards town, the fading light of the evening sun waned as it dipped further and further into the horizon.
Hues of pinks gave way to blues and purple, which quickly gave way to black.
It was another dark night, without many of any visible stars in the sky, an unfortunate result of the light pollution coming off of the city as they approached him reasoned.
Soon they were back in civilization and checking into their temporary accommodations.
Once their bags and belongings were safely tucked into the small bungalow house they'd rented, they'd headed out together downtown in search of dinner.
CJ and Dan both thought one last night of drinks and libations might be a good way to round out the trip, but Kenny and Amanda wanted for a little more after eating than to retire for the evening so as to be up bright and early and ready for their flight.
They checked with Tim to see if he was down, but he opted instead to take a solo stroll around town before retiring for the night himself.
So it was the five friends went their separate ways.
The night was cool, relatively speaking, and the skies as clear as the glaring lights of the urban oasis around them would allow for.
Lima, as a city, smelled curiously like any other big city, with its mixes of garbage and human waste, diesel and car fuels, and of course the smells of fresh fish and cooked seafood.
Tim strolled block after block, pondering his experience thus far, until finding himself in an unusually quiet part of town.
He had been so consumed in thought he had failed to recognize that he had wandered well away from the touristy hotel and nightlife area, and well, into a very pastel, very residential one.
He smelled the air yet again, this time smelling competing wafts of home-cooked meals, a curious floral scent that seemed to hedge every other fragrance.
So consumed was he with this strange olfactory experience that he'd entirely failed to notice the two men with bandanas around their faces approach from behind, each with blades in hand.
Lima, like most large cities, is no stranger to crime, and for a clueless American traveler such as he to wander idly into a random part of town in the dead of night like this was universally an invitation for either trouble or a most amazing experience.
Sadly, in this instance, it was the former which had found him.
A voice barked from behind him.
