As he ran, he looked over to the angry SUV driver, expecting to see him giving chase.
But instead, there was nothing.
Neither driver, nor SUV.
Ignoring this, he ran onward, sparing a glance backward over his shoulder only after he'd made it roughly a block.
What he saw, or rather, what he didn't see, caused him to run even faster, as behind him there were no sirens, nor busted red car, nor SUV, nor angry driver, nor nurse, nor traffic, nor anything.
Quite literally, anything.
It was a void.
A void which seemed wholly and oddly familiar in its nothingness.
Tim stopped dead in his tracks.
Whatever ringing in his ears or pain in his head that had been there was now well and gone, replaced only by a deep dread.
He swore that as he looked into the void, it looked back.
Not only did it look back, in fact, but rather, it felt as though it smiled.
The void had smiled.
Whether it be at Tim or upon him would remain a mystery, were mysteries ever a thing again.
But it smiled all the same.
Not knowing what else to do, Tim turned and ran.
His legs and muscles came to burn as he sprinted and dashed as fast as he could, away from the invisible yet fully comprehended maw that sat as and within that darkness.
He knew not why, but perhaps it was the original destination he'd had in mind.
His legs seemed to carry him for block after block, across intersection after intersection, all in the aim of reaching his club.
It had, he remembered, a large steel cooler.
