Life-changing.
The following days seemed to drag, though only due to the perfectly ordinary time distortion that anticipation creates.
When one is dreading something in the near future, time moves at a brisker pace than normal.
Inversely, when waiting for something one is looking forward to, time generally could not possibly move slower unless it stopped entirely.
However, soon it was time for the friends to rally up and make their way to the airport.
Their flight was not for several hours, and as they arrived early as was reasonable.
Likewise, spurred on by the airline's insistence that lines could be long, so it would be best to arrive well ahead of schedule, they were somewhat annoyed to note that the nighttime traffic of the larger international airport was minimal at best.
Ticket agents and TSA all stood around looking as bored as bored could be.
Some joked quietly to one another, others simply stared into their phones.
As the group approached the roped out zigzag pathway typically employed to manage the hundreds of people who'd be in line at any given moment, they were collectively annoyed with the needless back and forth they had to walk just to make it to security.
After the first few rows, Tim had had enough.
Fuck this, he said to himself, as he began bending low from the waist to slip beneath one rope after another.
Though his path was now a straight line, the bending and ducking proved to be considerably more physically taxing than simply walking would have been.
a fact not lost on the bored-looking TSA agent who sat at his booth, watching and trying not to smirk or chuckle.
This, likewise, was not lost on Tim, who rather immediately realized it was all purposeful.
Hi, Tim said, finally reaching the small black check-in station.
Hello, sir, the agent replied.
Handing his passport and ticket over to the agent, Tim asked,
Be honest with me.
You guys keep those ropes set up just for a laugh, right?
