Uh in New Zealand we have had a fuel tax moratorium for many years.
Our government has not increased fuel tax.
We reversed the planned increases
by the last government and we have had to put capital funding from general taxation into build new roads.
So the reality is with roading, someone is always paying for it.
It's being paid for by tax.
And so really what Labor did yesterday was the classic, I'll say I'll give you something with this hand, but I will be taking it with the other.
Yeah, well look, we've been saying for some months, given the heightened uh fuel price with events in the Middle East, it seems unlikely we would want to do a big hike to the fuel tax on the first of January.
We haven't, as a cabinet, formally deliberated on that yet.
And so we don't have a government formalised position.
As a as a national party person, I've been pretty explicit and said we don't want to lift fuel tax.
next year.
That's uh not something we want to do.
Um but look, Cabinet does need to discuss that overall position.
No, we can't forever put it off.
Uh the current circumstances are not only the heightened oil price, but also we are still recovering from that heightened inflation that the oil price has come on.
And we recognise that things are still very challenging for people.
Ultimately, where we want to get to uh is that we've got growing economy, low inflation, and actually we uh can lift the petrol tax in small, modest, regular increments so that we know there is funding going in to maintain your local roads.
Because the issue is if you're not putting more money into roads,
You get potholes everywhere, you get bridges that get washed away and major cyclones that can't be rebuilt, you get road closures that can't be fixed up.
