Look, my theory is that he's not very numerous.
So when they set that target out saying we want to increase spending and revenue to thirty-three percent, that someone had told him was a good idea, he went, Oh yeah, that sounds, you know, not much more than the current, which is thirty percent.
What he didn't recognise is that is billions of dollars of extra tax every year, the equivalent of a hundred dollars per Kiwi household every week.
And I just wonder if he doesn't quite I appreciate that the scale of his spending plans, the scale of his unfunded promises so far is such that it would require masses of new tax.
No, look, I've hunted and hunted.
There are no magic money trees.
I wish there was some sort of secret solution, but in the end, if you want to pay for more things as a government, you got two options.
You either borrow more and more and get the country in the hock, or you take the money in tax from other people's bank accounts.
And Chris Hipkins has opted for the latter.
Ultimately, he's prevaricated on the subject, but ultimately he's aiming for more.

And as I say, yesterday's little flutter was a fig leaf.
Clearly he is feeling pressure because New Zealanders know his track record isn't to spend money effectively.
It's one thing to say, Yes, I'm taxing you and it's all going to deliver great things but his record is they managed to triple the debt.
And what did you get out of it?
You didn't get lifted achievement rates, you didn't get less violent crime, you didn't get lower health waiting lists.
