That's what we want, you know, because someone who treats you as an equal will be less likely to dehumanise you and use violence.

So, you know, that work is really, really important in the community.

And then we also provide services in healing and recovery to help women when they're out of that real crisis phase, get back on track, you know, back into employment, back feeling good and strong and themselves.

Yeah, and I think these experiences often really undermine your confidence and self-esteem and, you know, so often you've been told you're worthless and you're good for nothing and much worse.

Yeah.

So, you know, when you're going for training or employment, all of us find that a bit tough and you've got to put your brave face on and get out and, you know, sell yourself in those situations.

So, you know, the women we serve have got some additional barriers around some of that.

So making sure that they've got the right support and care to really build them up and help them with that is really important.

I would say often very isolated and very confused.

But they come from every walk of life, from every profession, from every socioeconomic background, from every suburb.

um but what they've got in common is you know an experience of of violence that's really shattered their life you know and their their relationships you know it's isolated them it's fractured relationships often with their children um

But also what I see in those women is this tremendous courage and this kind of, sometimes it can be a tiny little hope, but no one walks into a refuge thinking it can't be different.

You know, when you walk in, you're looking for it to change.

And what we want to do is kind of keep igniting that spark and help it to grow and really help people understand the options they have so they don't feel so alone.

Yeah, absolutely.

I mean, sometimes I say if everyone who came in to stay with us at refuge had simply left the relationship, that it'd still be a tough job, don't get me wrong, but our job would probably be a little bit easier.

Yeah.

But the truth is the women that we have who stay with us are still often one foot in and one foot out.

And they're still trying to work out what to do because they're still getting bombarded with those messages like, I'll stop drinking or I promise I'll be good.
