These are too accessible.
And it really stuck with me, that first rejection that I got that said, you know, this feels a little bit too accessible.
And to be fair to them, I'm guessing what they meant was obviously every literary journal does it differently.
So maybe they were looking for, but it's the specific word they used, accessibility, like it was a negative that really framed the way that I saw my work in a positive way.
Because I'm like, what kind of poet do I want to be?
Do I want to be a poet that's read by 10 people because I've made my work that way?
Or do I want my work to be able to read someone and say, you're not alone and give them a hug?
Yes.
And so it was a very conscious choice to become that person.
And so every rejection I got kind of fueled me towards the woman that I was going to be.
But it was so hard, Elizabeth.
Yeah.
I can't for the life of me remember the exact first one, but I remember the one that went, that started doing well.
It was Perspectives.
And it's just a very short poem.
And it's about, you know, I think I wrote it literally after a rejection, like, you know, some...
It was basically about like being able to see the world and not... Some people are born with this idea that like, you know, everything is terrible.
And some people are born with this idea that everything can be made good.
And I would rather be the second person, no matter how hard it gets.
And so Perspectives was like just literally about a shift in perspective.
