Finally, I did come back and it took a long time to fix that relationship.
It did work from all of us collectively to fix it.
I'm very lucky I have parents who did want to do the work because it would have been so easy for them to go.
You know, when I came here and I did start from scratch, I started at, you know, I was cleaning the same university like on occasion that I studied at.
And it's so interesting to go from a student to a cleaner because suddenly you become invisible.
You become invisible to the same people who taught you, teachers.
You become invisible to students who knew you because you are no longer in the same social strata.
You're now below them in their eyes.
And that taught me so much about class and the way that it works in this country.
But also...
When I worked as a carer, I was working with these incredible young people.
I was working with young people with disabilities.
And they were just the most incredible, funny, kind people that I had ever worked with.
I felt incredibly privileged and very lucky to work with them because of the group of young people that they were.
And I started writing my poetry and putting it online because they basically went, Auntie, you can't just write your little poetries in your book and read them to us.
You've got to start putting them somewhere.
So I started putting them online because I tried sending them to various literary journals.
No one wanted them.
They were too, what was it?
The word that was used for the first time and not a polite way.
