A study by a visiting US researcher has found that pressures on Australian general practice from the aging population may result in trainee GPs not seeing enough children and perhaps being underskilled in diagnosing and dealing with childhood problems.
Gary Freed is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan.
How did you do that?
We should say registrars are junior doctors and you have registrars in general practice who are in training and they carry log books and they log the patients that they're seeing so that somebody can monitor their training.
And what did you find?

Diabetes, asthma, congenital abnormalities, that sort of thing.
Not to mention children who've come through neonatal intensive care units with some disability.
But that could be just coughs and colds.
I mean it could just be that they're seeing children with upper respiratory infections or maybe some diarrhea and vomiting, which is the bulk of general practice pediatrics compared to an adult of say seventy five with diabetes, coronary heart disease and maybe some dementia.
Were you able to drill down to see what was going on?
Were they missing kids?
They were coming with coughs and colds, but they actually had some complexity behind them and they were missing that, or these children were actually being captured by the children's hospitals or private pediatricians and not being seen in general practice at all?
So have you tested your hypothesis that they're being squeezed out and looked after elsewhere?
So are you got any evidence of errors or children suffering as a result?
Now, I trained in pediatrics and my experience from long ago now was that even in the old days when GPs did get more experience, although GP training in those days was much more primitive than it is today where it's very sophisticated, there was a lot of nervousness about dealing with children and a lot of early referral.
You didn't find many GPs comfortable looking after children.
So what's the solution here?
