So it was a joy to figure out how to film them within this environment, never being overly prescriptive as a director and telling them how to behave or where to be, but knowing we were choosing our framing and even sometimes, you know, the way we'd move with them.

For instance,

When they first enter the apartment, the only person who's filmed on steadicam is Penelope because her character kind of moves in a very different way.

And I wanted you to sort of subconsciously feel that she has a different way of experiencing this night and that she has some sort of different perspective and you can't quite pin her down.

Yeah.

So we called it Pina Cam because her character's name is Pina.

So all of these choices were made knowing that we wanted to have these kind of rules for ourselves as a crew and then let the actors be completely free within that framework.

The funny thing was because I was in both worlds, I got to kind of experience that in two very different ways.

I think you can't ever know it, but you can sense that you know when you're being really honest.

Everyone knows when they're being authentic within a feeling.

And all I could do was understand that I was being as honest as I possibly could within a moment and that I had to trust that that would be what would work best within the scene.

Yeah.

I also think that in order to earn the other character's reaction to me, I had to commit so completely to being that very vulnerable character because they needed that level of vulnerability to react to.

So it almost made it easier for me to perform because it was on behalf of what I needed from them and their characters.

So the kind of more broken I was...

the more I gave Penelope to react to, for instance.

So it was the first time I've kind of experienced acting in that way.

Also, for as long as I've been acting, people have been saying to me, teachers from childhood have been saying to me, acting is just listening.

I have never truly understood that until this project.

And I'm ashamed that it took me 42 years to understand this.
