But with a cast this brilliant, I was completely able to understand that all I had to do was be present and react to what they were doing.

And immediately that automatically put me into the kind of most authentic state of mind.

We had this rehearsal period before filming that was one of the non-negotiables, right?

It's the first thing people give away in any production.

They give away rehearsal like it's meaningless.

It puts everyone at a disservice.

So we had these two weeks where it was just Rashida Jones and Will McCormick, the cast and myself, sitting at a table, working through the script.

And understanding the intention of every moment, which allows for improvisation to take place because as long as you're aligned on the intention, anything goes.

We understood our characters so well based on those sessions of, you know, chewing on the material together, forcing ourselves to justify every decision.

It was like a gut check for every moment and reinventing these moments as we went along.

And the film really dramatically changed in those two weeks in a very profound way.

So by the time we started filming, everyone knew exactly what we were going for.

And so I wasn't afraid to allow for that flexibility because I was sure that everyone understood the assignment, that we were all telling the same story.

I think when that kind of flexibility can become a little dangerous, a little reckless, is if you haven't given everyone the opportunity to align on the goals, which, as we said often, that isn't ever offered to people.

So I knew that everyone understood where we were trying to go, and I loved allowing for –

surprises to take place because the crew understood exactly how we were going to capture the story.

And so the actors could make decisions that were spontaneous.

And we all felt it was never going to kind of throw us completely off the rails.

And we continued to reimagine the script as we went through.

I mean, a week before we shot the ending, we did not know the ending.
