Every church is political.
Every church either challenges or reinforces the way power is organized in the world.
And not speaking about politics is speaking about politics because silence is not neutral.
Silence protects the status quo.
It tells the community that centering the comfort of the powerful is more important than the safety of the vulnerable.
You can't talk about loving your neighbor without talking about politics.
Who gets health care?
Who is protected?
Who belongs?
Who gets left behind?
Isn't it interesting?
Some people want God in their politics.
They just don't want politics in their God.
The question is not whether a church is political.
It is.
The question is who benefits from the politics it refuses to name.
Now, the issue is often cost.
Speaking honestly about what's going on in our world today can cost members money and the institution itself.
And to challenge the system would be to challenge a system that is working for them.
