Yes.
Well, that's the key to it.
I mean, there has to be a certain amount of truth, doesn't there, in everything like that.
McDonagh's work is like that.
Father Ted, the boys, Graham and Arthur, their work was like that as well.
There was always a little bit of truth and a bit of a grain of what's actually happening in Irish society in the background that pulls you in and allows you to have that fun with it, you know.
It's hard to believe it.
I mean, again, my Stephen Johns work, there was a touch of the surreal and the daftness and madness about it.
It wasn't just, you know...
We collaborated with some great artists like Des Dillon and people like that and costumes, Lenore MacDonald and people, you know, to create these characters that were a little bit grotesque and daft, but very much Irish and people could relate to it.
And when we traveled abroad with that, it was actually fun touring America.
with it.
The late McCourt brothers were very good to us, Frank and Malachy.
They had a show called A Couple of Black Arts, which was a precursor to Angela's Ashes.
And we met them in New York when we were playing in the Irish Arts Centre.
And they had done a circuit of America called the Natural History Theatres all across the Midwest and everything.
So they made a few phone calls and got us on that tour.
And we ended up in some mad cities.
