So the city gets kind of carved up into these areas of control and influence.

And then starting around 1924,

You know, what had been a sort of fragile peace among these different groups devolves into violence.

And that's when you sort of see particularly the South Side gang really trying to make a move to take over the city as a whole.

And even while all this is kind of happening, as I said, you still have these kind of like mom and pop people trying to just make some extra income by selling booze illegally.

Yeah.

From my perspective, I think Chicago emerges as such a center for what's called the bootlegging industry, right?

Mm-hmm.

The organized crime industry, for the same reasons that Chicago itself is a city, kind of like brewing in leaps and bounds towards the end of the 19th century and into the 20th.

And as on one hand, it's location.

So it's like right there on Lake Michigan, but also connected to the Mississippi River through canals, but more critically, center of the nation's railroad hub and becoming the center of the nation's growing highway networks, right?

And so all of these different industries are based in Chicago.

I mean, you think about organized crime, but you also think about the union stockyards, right?

At this time, being the center of like meat production.

So just as you know, you're getting raw materials coming into the city that then get produced into these various products and then distributed all across the country.

Chicago is also like a really great hub for the manufacturing distribution of illegal booze as well.

They're building on the same infrastructure.

At the time, prohibition goes into effect.

There are about 60 different breweries operating in Chicago, which is a good number.

And they don't go anywhere.
