was this center for industry and manufacturing, had this great infrastructure, had a good location, and then also just had a huge population of immigrants too, for whom drinking was an important part of their like cultural life.
And all those factors I think contributed to it.

And in Chicago, you had a law enforcement and a political culture that was willing to sort of turn a blind eye to enforcing the Volstead Act.
So, I mean, when you look at how much money the Capone gang spent just on like paying off people, it was a big sum.
But that allowed them to kind of work with a degree of relative safety.
It's partially true, like so much else with prohibition.
And I think it's a lot because of the way in which popular culture sort of depicts and embraces prohibition.
you know, criminal elements.
And because of figures like Capone who are really into sort of self-promotion and became sort of associated with this.
But when you look at, like, let's just look at O'Banion's gang for a moment, right?
You had, I mean, he was, you know, ethnically Irish, but born in the United States.
So it was one of his lieutenants, Bugs Moran.
But then Jaime Weiss was, you know, a Polish immigrant.
Another one of his associates was, you know, came from a German family.
