So late 1940s, like I've described, both, you know, managed to make a bit of a living in design as well as teaching and so on.
Then my father, with another colleague, Clive Latimer, they spotted that in New York, the Museum of Modern Art was putting on this low cost furniture competition, international competition.
which was entered by kind of all the great names in international modernism.
I mean, Hans Wegener and Eames, among many others.
And these two chaps who were teaching away at Buckner Mark School thought, OK, well, we'll have a go at this.
And my father being my father, you know, they really, really, as he would have put it, knocked themselves out.
And he came up with this extremely original modular system using tubular moulded plywood.
intricate drawings, working out ergonomics and possible use.
This, you know, with no experience in furniture design, actually.
I mean, he'd been taught at High Wycombe School of Art, but no practical experience and sent it off and then tried to forget about it.
And it was actually two days before Christmas, I think, they got a telegram and I've still got that telegram.
that says, congratulations, stop, you have won first prize in the storage section.
Come to New York, Nelson Rockefeller, to deliver the prize, you know.
And they went... You know, they must have almost thought it was a joke, mustn't they?
Yeah.
That's right.
Absolutely.
And then they found themselves flying, taking an aeroplane, an aircraft to New York, you know, across the Atlantic, which, I mean, in those days would have been unbelievably adventurous and exciting and glamorous and beyond, you know, his wildest dreams and actually meeting Eames and so on.
He won second prize in the seating competition, yes.
So, yeah, I mean, I know it as design history, but more than that, I know it from how my father talked about it.
