Because, of course, the house was always full of prototypes and dad would get everyone who came in to try them out.
So she saw that as her role.
But, I mean, she also, of course, did a lot herself for the festival.
I mean, she, as much as him, saw the Festival of Britain as this incredible opportunity and very proactively approached wallpaper manufacturers and she did upholstery fabric.
And her existing new client, Heels, she persuaded them to produce a completely radical textile design, which was clearly completely uncommercial and of no interest.
But they said, OK, we'll do a few yards for the festival.
And this is Calix, which became, you know, her most famous design and is one of the most influential textile designs of Britain in the 20th century.
And that was actually designed...
at my father's request, because alongside doing all the furniture for the Royal Festival Hall, and signage and posters and so on, he was also designing room sets for the Homes and Gardens Pavilion at the Festival, which of course displayed his own furniture designs.
But he said to her, I need an uncompromisingly modern textile to go with the furniture.
Something like what you were experimenting with, do that.
And she came up with Calix.
I'd say formally not at all in the sense that they worked in quite different fields all their careers.
My father worked not just furniture but product design, three-dimensional design.
My mother, not just textiles but all kinds of surface pattern design, two dimensions.
Quite different clients, quite separate careers, quite independently successful and acclaimed.
But I think certainly the 40s, 50s and 60s, their mutual vision, shared vision and discussions and feedback on each other's work would have been incredibly important.
No, they had one studio.
They were, but in two drawing boards facing each other.
