Not exactly in a rags to riches sense.
He came from a middle class family in the tiny country of Malta.
And the way he tells the story is that he knew that he wanted to come to the U.S.
and go to grad school here.
And he had a mentor who said, look, if you stay here, I can promise you that you will be a big fish in a small pond.
And he said, I'd rather be a medium-sized fish in a very big pond.
Which is a great way to think about coming to America.
And that's exactly what he did.
He came, he went to grad school in Binghamton, New York.
And then he got a job in New Mexico, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
He met my mother, who was teaching there, too.
She was a young linguist.
They got married, and then the first good job he got was at University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
They moved there, and pretty soon after that, I was born.
And so I grew up with parents who cared a lot about literature and learning, and they cared a lot about politics.
We weren't politically connected.
I don't think I ever met an elected official while I was a child.
But I grew up with a sense that it was very important to know what was happening in the world.
My dad was always reading the newspaper.
The TV was always tuned to the news.
