And that's really a big part of what Bow Cancer Awareness Month is all about.
Well, look, we do know that some of the things that relate to risk for bowel cancer, and that's things like alcohol, smoking, lack of fibre in your diet, physical inactivity or overweight, and those kind of things.
That's a real personal pedagogy.
Yeah, yeah.
I wasn't looking at anyone when I said that, by the way.
So we know there are things you can do to reduce your risk, and we know that some other countries are further ahead than that.
But in truth, researchers are doing a lot of work really hard to try and find out more and understand what the mechanisms are and why they're particularly affecting New Zealand so much.
So there's more we need to know, but we also need to focus on what we know we can do, which is reduce our risks, know the symptoms, get screened or checked when you can.
Yes, so what you have to say is, from an individual basis, if you've got bowel cancer, do not think to yourself, this is my fault, because it absolutely isn't.
This is almost like a lottery.
We've all got a certain number of tickets, but some things we do give us extra tickets.
There's still randomness.
You can have people do all the right things and get bowel cancer.
You have people who do all the wrong things and don't.
So it's not that, but there are things you can do to change, so we can...
add that fiber in your diet get a bit more physically active cut down on the drinking cut down on the red and processed meat a little bit maybe make that make that barbecue a little bit more of a one-off treat rather than a regular thing every week you know those kind of things so these things bring down those risk factors which just reduce things but there are some things we can't do because you know ultimately we all get a little bit old when this is something that develops even more through age so so I think we have to recognize some things you can do some things you can't but the big thing is
Do what you can to tackle risk, but also know what to look for, know those symptoms, because that can be the difference between finding cancer late when it's inoperable and finding it early when it's incredibly curable.
Like more than 90% of people will be able to just crack on, get on with the rest of their life after bowel cancer if we catch it that first stage, stage one.
So it is true that there are more people who get bowel cancer when they're older, but more than a tenth of bowel cancers will be for people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.
And that proportion is growing all the time, as we said.
