But Johnson effectively giving up on the war for reasons we can go into then essentially allows the communists to claim victory at all these levels.
The one element that maybe people are not aware of is that hours after Johnson delivers his speech, he calls the mayor of Chicago daily and says, you know, do you think maybe I can come back from this?
I mean, right away, it's almost like he regrets it.
And then because he decides not to run because, I mean, he loses Cronkite.
Right.
And then and then, I mean, he recognized that that, you know, that that within his own party, I mean, there's going to be a mutiny if he runs.
And then and then, of course, you know, like like Bobby wants to run.
And so everything indicates that, OK, he really needs to kind of quit.
But then Kennedy gets shot.
And Johnson is actually considering at one point of just showing up at the convention in Chicago and essentially announcing that, you know what, boys and girls?
I'm your candidate.
A plan is actually drawn to that effect.
But then the Secret Service tells Johnson, listen, if you go to Chicago, we cannot guarantee your safety.
And so the plan is scrapped.
But for the longest time, there was a sense that, oh, he's completely defeated.
And he feels that way at that moment.
But then there's that resilient part of him that says, maybe I can come back.
But then there's also his own health concerns, right?
And sure enough, I mean, he would have died before completing his second term.
that's what happens.
