I don't know if he's contemporary or historical because he's no longer with us.
But I think the artist that I will continue to keep learning from is Felix Gonzalez Torres.
So he is contemporary.
as an artist whose currency is so potent you know yeah he's so with us still and he's with us through people like you and it's kind of it's strange to realize that i'm now five years older than him when he died right yes i feel like so many so many artists like treat him as we all should as this kind of divine force almost but it's strange to think he died when he was 38 you know yeah
But I remember encountering the candy works for the first time.
I didn't see it.
It was, again, a book in Manila.
But this idea that like an artwork can be distributed and then replenished blew my mind.
You know, in some ways, like there are elements of that that appear in my work too.
And I think like those candies, like those posters, it's just an endless well of inspiration of how art can be generous, you know, of how anguish and economy can exist.
It's the impact of the work with such minimal means or with such apparently slight means that somehow only add to the import of the... And I think sometimes what gets lost in the kind of hagiographic treatment of his work is how genuinely radical he was.
And I wish I would have seen it, but there was quite a famous performance art where he would just talk about degrading social condition under the Reagan-Bush regime.
Mm.
There's a slideshow of just a publicity still of the dynasty cast that just is on repeat.
And you never see these works.
And the other works, the stacks, the candies, they're beautiful.
But actually, Felix Gonzalez-Soros was like the most political artist you can imagine.
Like one of the most meaningful shows I've ever been part of.
And I'm very lucky that there are many.
