I think that's important.
You know, I guess the sense of scale that the personal experience.
provides, I hope, would allow the audience to understand these larger histories within the proportion of themselves as well.
Well, I think the desire to move on from the Marcoses was a very conscious one.
I mean, it stems a huge part from them being back in power in a way.
Because in 2022, I brought the entirety of the Marcos project back to the Philippines.
And I'd always envisioned it, you know, this grand gesture of the whole 12-year project coming home.
And I'd always envisioned it in a very specific site.
So it was shown at the Ateneo Art Gallery in Manila, which was a loaded site for my parents because actually that was adjacent to the site where they were incarcerated for a year.
And that site for me was always going to be where the work would culminate.
And it just so happened that during the time that I brought the show back home,
It was also the presidential elections where Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
was leading to become the president of the Philippines.
And so three weeks after my show opened, the Marcoses came back in a big way, you know, in the biggest way you can imagine.
And I think that collision between the grand artistic gesture and the kind of political failure that led to this return.
I mean, I never had any illusions that my 3D printed jewels would change the course of history.
But it was still really dispiriting, you know, to go through that moment.
Yes and no, because the spectre of the Marcuses will always haunt the project.
But in the sense that the project, the collection of Jane Ryan and William Saunders, in the sense that it was a forensic reconstruction of the loot, it provided this...
really quite horrific end to a very extended endeavour.
