But then, you know, the show carried on until August.

And I think what happened was incredible because the exhibition became a site for people to grieve.
And, you know, the structures through which I display my work is always through these, like, very long plinths that kind of demand people kind of passing through it almost like a casket, you know?

And so I think there was a moment when it became clear that Marcus Jr.
was going to be elected and the university, because it has always been a hotbed of anti-dictatorship activities, you know, people gathered in the main kind of green.
And then it became kind of logical for people to then go see the exhibition.
And so it functioned as a kind of wake because there was never a body to grieve.
And so the work became this...
body you know and then thinking about it I think it's probably the first time I've actually been able to articulate this it was incredible for work to be able to do that that was something I couldn't have been able to imagine not that I wanted to either right of course
No, I think, like I said, it was dispiriting, but also incredibly liberating to have literally performed a wake for your own art.
When I ended up producing the book for the project, I was like, it's a catalogue, but also a kind of exorcism of that history and a desire to move forward.
But you're right, what it did give me were these modes of production, whether it's collaborating with my wife, Frances, to make sculpture, or there's been this accompanying side to this project where I ended up being on this kind of de facto lecture circuit where I would talk about this project at length.
And it permitted me to write.
I felt like I became more articulate as I went through this 12-year endeavour.
It also became clear that family wasn't just...
an archive it was also an agent through which I can explore and I can make stuff let's move on to the questions that we ask all our guests who was the first artist whose work you loved
