I think the first artist who permitted me to imagine being an artist, it was my aunt Pasita.
Because when I was growing up, she was already living abroad, but she would come home every year and she made it a point every year to have an exhibition back home.
And it was literally like a one-woman circus coming to town because we didn't know what she was going to look like.
We didn't know what colour her nails were going to be.
And she was this larger-than-life character.
You know, so from the very beginning as a kid, like...
this idea of what an artist does has always been very, very present.
But I don't know if I loved her work then, but I think she was just there.
And, you know, and I think her life was something that, you know, we were involved in.
Like we're 60 cousins.
It was quite a lot.
My dad was one of 12.
Okay.
And so all the cousins would actually be involved in like painting the frames of her work.
And I think we'd get paid in fried chicken or something.
Yeah.
And so Pasito was this incredibly present figure, but an artist I first fell in love with in terms of actually developing my own practice.
It would be Egon Schiele, perhaps.
I think I remember coming across a book because I think in Manila, you know, there weren't really any traveling shows back then or museums to go to.
And so everything was like consumed through these, I don't know, compendiums of like art of the 20th century.
