For us in the field, it was a real game changer because suddenly we're moving from okay, th these additives might cause cancer or uh have some other effects or you know, make kids go crazy, but no one had actually thought that the processing could lead to this
overeating and obese you know, and obesity just by the fact of how they've done it.
Yes, so that eating study didn't address this whole question of the additives.
And there have been mouse studies and uh showing that
these various additives could affect uh
Mice and make them
know get diabetes and and other things, but there hadn't been any uh human studies uh of any size at all.
And people particularly interested in artificial sweeteners.
And so this very good Israeli group from the Elenav lab at the Weitzmann Institute had been doing some of these studies in in mice and then
got a grant to do a big s big study in humans to see what were the effects of various artificial sweeteners on the gut microbiome and health.
And so too.
What these guys did was to say, Let's recruit
Um hundred and twenty
uh normal people who have very low
uh exposure to artificial sweeteners and let's test them with uh four of the common ones and see what happens to their gut microbes and then see uh if that is gonna
have an effect on their blood parameters of of of metabolism, etcetera.
You might have a a sports drink, for example.
electrolyte rehydrate your body type thing.
That would have sweetness in it.
Low sugar, low calorie foods uh usually have sweeteners in them.
