And the first that the Greeks know about this, the first that they realize what is happening, is when there's this sudden gout of flame in the darkness of the west.
And what is happening is the crew on board the fire ship are running around as fast as they can, kindling every bit of the ship in turn.
Then the warships, the two ships that are towing it, pick up speed.
They row absolutely as fast as they can.
Meanwhile, this thing behind them is turning into a fireball.
The crew are diving off to be picked up by the small boats.
There are these pots of kind of inflammable material in the rigging, which is starting to explode and sending...
kind of gouts of flame out into the night.
This whole thing is turning into an enormous fireball.
And the two warships just keep going until they're just within a few meters of the promontory.
Then they cast off their ropes.
They veer off absolutely at the last moment.
And the fire ship, which has never got its sail set, but is just running on the momentum,
crashes straight into the promontory, guided into it, right next to Deides' siege towers.
And the whole thing just immediately goes up in flames.
The Tyrians land from the small boats, from the warships,
They set more fires.
They light both of Diades' two towers on fire.
And then they reboard their boats and then they haul off and they wait for the Greeks to come and try to put the fire out, which of course they do.
Hundreds of men rush to the promontory trying to extinguish the flames.
