And it was happening to white homosexual men.

That is real, but they were so far from the only group being affected.

But it really did something.

That association and the deep homophobia of it and the deep hatred of men

gay men and the deep fear of them and somehow that they were dirty or you know ill because this is just on the heels of of homosexuality being declassified as a psychiatric disorder in essence so that's 73 so you think about what gay liberation meant and then to have this it's like the kind of exclamation point that homophobes could only dream about

So it has all of these consequences.

And part of what it was like to be, I mean, you probably have these memories too.

You know, people were men for the most part in that moment, although it certainly wasn't only men.

Men were visible then.

were dying and many of them wasting away and their cheeks getting completely gaunt.

They would have Kaposi's sarcoma, the sort of lesions that would appear on the body, one of the opportunistic infections that we know is more likely to affect people assigned male at birth than people assigned female at birth.

So more likely to affect men than women.

But it was terrifying.

There was a healthcare system that...
