It was...
in a sense, the great man, George Washington's statement, testament to the American people.
He was trying to persuade the American people of a number of things, most important of all, that it was not smooth sailing and that this union had to endure.
And it could only endure if Americans found a way to get beyond what he called faction, what we would call partisanship today, that they had to work together despite their regional, religious, and political differences.
No, no, he was witnessing that.
He, as a figure, had held the country together.
He's an extraordinary man, as all of your listeners should know.
He wins the Revolutionary War, in a sense, and then resigns command, does not make himself the king or military generalissimo.
And then he comes back at the Constitutional Convention and serves as president.
And then in this farewell address, announces that after two terms, after eight years, he's going to peacefully, voluntarily retire.
which is really quite extraordinary.
These are moves on his part designed to reinforce the message, which is that this government, this union, this experiment is larger than any one man.
We are not held together because of Washington.
or Napoleon.
We are held together because of a system, because of a common set of beliefs, because of a creed and a set of democratic procedures that we believe in.
And that's the argument he's making.
And he's trying to live that as well as articulate that.
I think that's exactly right.
I mean, the most anti-monarchical thing is not simply the argument of the revolutionaries.
It's that the first person in a position to make himself monarch steps away and leaves it to the country and our procedures and institutions to find unity, not to find unity in a charismatic figure.
