That's such an important lesson for us, the power of resignation and letting an institution get on its own feet.

This is something he's selling throughout his presidency, that there's something larger than being just a citizen from Georgia or Massachusetts.
It's not just about the federal government.
It's about a commitment.
It's about a cause.
There's almost a religious quality to it, a sacredness.
And this is something Abraham Lincoln, who we'll talk about later, really, really picks up upon.
Washington is saying that union is not just a temporary compromise.
It's something deeper that has redefined us.
It's sort of what, on a deeper level, a coach is telling his set of teammates that you're not just on this team today because you happen to be here, right?
There's a deeper spiritual connection between you.
And that's the argument Washington's
And if I could say, it's also radical.
It seems obvious to us now, but it's radical because people were subjects.
They weren't citizens before this, right?
The French, of course, defined citizenship in the French Revolution.
But with those exceptions, most English subjects had thought of themselves as subjects of the king.
