You recall, of course, when Jimmy Carter was president and trying to secure the hostage release deal with Iran, Reagan and his team worked behind the scenes to prevent that deal from going into effect.
And then after beating
during the elections and Reagan came in and enacted basically the exact same deal and took the credit for it.
This is unfortunately the way that American politics has worked for a long time, that wag the dog strategy has been effective.
But I think this is where it's so much more important that we have a united front in just demanding justice and basic humanity.
You're not going to be able to advocate, and I don't mean you specifically, but as people outside of Palestine, we're not going to be able to advocate for Palestinians better than Palestinians.
But that's where self-determination really comes into play.
And I think that's where the pressure needs to be, that if you're sincere about this, if you're serious about this peace deal, if you're serious about sustainability, about making sure Hamas or another organization like them doesn't come to power, that they have democratic rule based on the will of the people, it has to start with an independent Palestinian state where Palestinians have rights over their own property, their own rules, their own laws, and their own ability to advocate for themselves on an international scale.
That's right.
