This is news to me too, so I'm sitting over here grinning.

Well, I would have, before going through the whole publishing journey, I probably would have pitched it very differently.

So I've learned a lot and it's hard for me to remember how I talked about the book.

Now I'm very used to talking about the book, but if I were to meet someone this afternoon in an elevator, I would probably say it's an untelling of Cinderella, not a retelling.

I use that word really specifically from the point of view of the so-called evil stepmother.

And

Typically, I can just leave it at that, or we can kind of pick at some threads and unravel things a bit.

But sometimes I like to talk about that there's a falconry storyline, that it's a love story, but not just about romance.

It's familial love, a mother's love, love between friends and women.

The book, I think, is very layered.

Yeah, and that was one thing that came later.

I got that from one of my many conversations along the way.

But I think, you know, the Lady Tremaine is so much more than a villain origin story.

It became more than that as I was writing.

I realized there was so much about the Cinderella fairy tale that I wanted to

undo, so to speak, and reframe and think through, especially as the mother of two little girls myself.

So the book is not just, you know, Lady Tremaine's story.

It's kind of a reexamination of the Cinderella myth itself.
