It was very much so.

It depends on how far back you want to go, but I had written a whole other book and failed to publish it, failed to get representation and poured years of my life into this project.

It was like what I worked on in grad school and for years afterwards.

So I had actually quit writing pretty dramatically before going to Lady Twain.

I was pouring my creative energy into other projects.

And then in 2023, I hadn't sat at my desk, not literally, but I hadn't sat at my writing desk for five or six years or so.

And I had an 18-month-old daughter and my husband out of the blue became really unexpectedly ill.

And we found out he had a brain abscess.

He was rushed into emergency brain surgery.

And it was a grueling many months long recovery.

So we're spending a lot of time in the hospital system here in Portland.

But

Also, even outside of the hospitals, it was just hard.

I was effectively a single parent for a number of months.

I was caretaking for him.

I was trying to work.

And in one of those hours in the hospital, I was scrolling on my phone trying to distract myself, as you do.

And I came across a depiction of Cinderella's evil stepmother, and I recognized her immediately from my own childhood.

It was so visceral.

I learned she had a name, and I'd never heard her name before, Lady Tremaine.
