I told them I did a funeral last week in Hartford, Connecticut, where a cop killed a young man.
We got the cop fired the next day.
And I told them...
A young lady stopped me in the airport and said, you know, I don't understand.
Why are you doing this still out there?
She said, you got your own organization all over the country.
She said she was a Chattanooga.
She went to one of our meetings in the Chattanooga chapter.
She said, you got a national TV show, national radio show.
She said, I used to think you did this to become famous.
I said, no, I became famous so I could do this.
I wanted to use my fame to put light in dark places.
Most of the cases we fought, people had not heard of the case till we went in.
And that's what he did.
He came to New York in the late 80s, when many people, particularly in the churches,
would not identify with us.
He jumped on the front line with us with the days of outrage when we were fighting things.
And I'd say, come on, this is Ben Chavis.
He said, no, no, no, you leave it.
