They were marsupials like those in Australia.
And there was a narrow channel between Lombok and Bali.
These are two islands, two Indonesian islands.
There's a chain of islands that runs along there all the way up to Flores.
And this strange phenomenon in the... And the birds as well.
There was this division, this strange... And he speculated that there was some kind of a line.
Why?
Well, one side Australian...
Why were the other sides Euro-Asian?
But the reason for it was not discovered until a fellow called Wegener, Alfred Wegener, a German, proposed the theory of plate tectonics back in 1915.
And nobody accepted it at the time.
But Plate Tectonics said that the world's continents are on plates.
And he surmised that this plate, the Australian plate, was moving north and had collided with the Euro-Asian plate around there.
And that, of course, the Australian side was carrying all the Australian creatures.
The ones on the other side were carrying the Eurasian creatures.
And this turned out to be true.
It was not until the 1960s was that theory accepted.
And there was a deep trench there which mammals couldn't cross.
Some of the birds did.
But the mammals couldn't cross this deep trench between Lombok and Bali.
