What are our interests?
What are the interests of the child?
And so I think that it's helpful to think about uh
adjudicating the conflict of risks in h inherent to the ethics of risk imposition, right?
What are the costs to us of not being able to engage in this behavior?
What are the costs to the person impacted, in this case the child, of our engaging in this behavior?
So our you know, how will it how might the child enjoy their life?
How might they be harmed by their life?
Um, and so
In adjudicating this conflict, we take a look at um we want to balance the competing interests, the parental interests in procreat procreation and the child's interest in having, you know, a life as good as possible, a perfect life actually is what anybody would want, but you're not gonna get that.
So something close to that or something that would um be a reasonable compromise between the two sets of interests.
And that's why I take I think that um rules in contractualism is kind of ideally suited to this kind of question because it's aimed at resolving distributive conflicts of interest.
you know, how to distribute benefits and burdens between people when they have e you know, equal claim to those benefits and burdens.
Um and so that's sort of the way I think the approach that makes sense to take
for this kind of a conflict, even though we we might think that parents and children have interests in common and parents want the best for their children and this is all true once the child is born.
But none of that applies before the child is born necessarily because before the child is born the child wants a pr you know, would have an interest if they're gonna be if you're gonna be born, you're like, you know
It would be good for you for your life to be excellent.
Um
Uh and but if you're gonna have a child, their life probably won't be excellent.
