Do you know, when I was in my first day at grammar school, the teacher said, I want you to yell out what your fathers do for a living.
I kept my head down.
My dad was a postman.
Kids yelled out consultant, accountant.
And I can remember mumbling postman as quietly as I could.
When I got home, I said to my dad, Dad, do you ever get bored just thinking letters through doors?
He said, son, your father lived as the royal male.
He made his son as if the queen herself had asked, well, ma'am, would you mind sticking some of her correspondence in as he walked around the streets?
And some years ago, I was invited to meet the queen to receive an award on behalf of what the team and Kev, the family, had done.
And I'm talking to the queen, and I think there's something I want to say to her.
I'm not sure if I've got the courage to say it.
And then I think, I'll never have the chance again.
And I hear myself say, ma'am,
May I humbly thank you for the incredible example you've been to us all down all these years.
And she said, you're very kind.
But what I really wanted to say, John, was my old man used to deliver your letters.
So it was lovely to have the OBE and Diane and the kids were there.
But my dad, you know, my dad used to shine his shoes before he went to work.
And one night I caught him cleaning underneath of his shoes.
